She was born at St. Lawrence, Nfld., Canada ca. 1858, and died at 1
Douglas Place, Sydney, N.S. 30 October 1919 at 5:30 p.m., aged 61 yrs., due to
heart disease; the daughter of George and Sabina (Fitzpatrick) Pike of St.
Lawrence, Nfld. At the time of
his marriage in 1883 he is listed as a store keeper at
St. Pierre
Island
, age 34; Sabina was aged 24 at the time and residing at St. Lawrence.
His death record claims his father was James Albert Lambert (born
Cumberland Co., N.S.) and his mother was Sabina Lambert (born Newfoundland), it
seems that the informant Fred Jay Lambert was a little confused to whose parents
they wanted on the death record.
At
the time of his marriage in 1883 he is listed as a store keeper at
St. Pierre
, age 34; and Sabina was 24 at the time at
St. Lawrence. James was a merchant
and had lived on the
St. Pierre
Island
since August, 1879 when he aided in the
saving of a house by fire. He was
commended by the community of
St. Pierre
. In
1888 he appears on a Census in
St. Pierre
on Rue Bisson: James age 39, Sabin Pike, age
28, Mary age 3, Carry age 2, and Albert age 7 mos.
James obtained a Crown Land Grant in
St. Lawrence
,
Newfoundland

His
grand-daughter Chloris (Dawe) Bailey of Summerside,
PEI
remembered that her mother recalled the
following about her father: “he spoke more than one language.
He use to meet the boats that came into the harbor in
St. Pierre
”. Chloris’s
mother May recalled to her that as a young girl she use to be invited to the
opera’s, and the Government House in
St. Pierre
”.
James
was a councilor in
St. Pierre
, and use to go out to meet the boats in the
harbor, sort of a harbor master.

Lambert of Channel in the Southern District of Newfoundland Married Woman in
consideration of the sum of one hundred and eighty five dollars paid to me by
George William Vardy of Port-aux-Basques for land she purchased from William
Rolls of Port-aux-Basques 16 August 1905, and sold it to the above George
William Vardy on 5 March 1910, witnessed by William J. Phillips, Mercantile
agent [Newfoundland Deed, 42:471].

Carrie (McCoubrey) McAdam recalls her mother mentioning she had lived in
Port-aux-Basques in
Newfoundland
after
St. Pierre
. Her
mother also mentioned that she was schooled at the Convent school at
St. Pierre
, and spoke French.

After an extended period of
unsatisfactory health. John J. [sic] Lambert passed away this week at his home on
Charlotte
Street
.
Mr. Lambert was 82 years of age had lived in
Sydney
virtually all his long life. Until a
few years ago when his health began to give way he carried on a furn[a]ture
business. He was a man held in
esteem by many friends. One daughter a[n]d several sons are left to mourn his
death.
