James Albert George Lambert (1846-1928)

of Nova Scotia, St. Pierre et Miqueleon, and Newfoundland

JAMES ALBERT GEORGE1 LAMBERT, born at Nova Scotia , Canada ca. 1846; and died at 146 Bentick St. , Sydney , Cape Breton , N.S. , Canada 17 April 1928 , aged 82 yrs., due to ---.  He married at St. Matthews Anglican Church, St. Lawrence , Newfoundland , Canada 9 April 1883 by Rev. A. S. H. Winsor to  SABINA PIKE.  She was born at St. Lawrence, Nfld., Canada ca. 1858, and died at 1 Douglas Place, Sydney, N.S. 30 October 1919 at 5:30 p.m., aged 61 yrs., due to heart disease; the daughter of George and Sabina (Fitzpatrick) Pike of St. Lawrence, Nfld.   At the time of his marriage in 1883 he is listed as a store keeper at St. Pierre Island , age 34; Sabina was aged 24 at the time and residing at St. Lawrence.   His death record claims his father was James Albert Lambert (born Cumberland Co., N.S.) and his mother was Sabina Lambert (born Newfoundland), it seems that the informant Fred Jay Lambert was a little confused to whose parents they wanted on the death record.

At the time of his marriage in 1883 he is listed as a store keeper at St. Pierre , age 34; and Sabina was 24 at the time at St. Lawrence.  James was a merchant and had lived on the St. Pierre Island since August, 1879 when he aided in the saving of a house by fire.  He was commended by the community of St. Pierre .  In 1888 he appears on a Census in St. Pierre on Rue Bisson: James age 39, Sabin Pike, age 28, Mary age 3, Carry age 2, and Albert age 7 mos.  James obtained a Crown Land Grant in St. Lawrence , Newfoundland 10 March 1888 [S746-9-2-39 – St. Lawrence 35:123].

His grand-daughter Chloris (Dawe) Bailey of Summerside, PEI remembered that her mother recalled the following about her father: “he spoke more than one language.  He use to meet the boats that came into the harbor in St. Pierre ”.  Chloris’s mother May recalled to her that as a young girl she use to be invited to the opera’s, and the Government House in St. Pierre ”.

James was a councilor in St. Pierre , and use to go out to meet the boats in the harbor, sort of a harbor master.
