The Erastus Smith Diaries

Erastus Smith was born on Oct 17, 1833 and died on March 11, 1926. The house where he was born and died at age 92 is still on the corner of Plain St and Bay Road near the Dry Pond Cemetery. We have a few of the journals that he kept.  When these entries were written, the Dry Pond Schoolhouse was on the southeast corner of Plain and West Streets.  Erastus is eleven, going on twelve as the journal begins. We have a few of the journals that he kept for at least the next fifteen years.  He has an older brother, James, and an older sister, Melissa.  Once young Erastus begins his entry, he rarely uses any punctuation to separate his sentences.

In July of 1845, Henry David Thoreau has just commenced living at Walden Pond.
